Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Miller
Miller, Mary Elizabeth (Harris)
Mary Elizabeth Miller (Harris) was born the eighth child of William and
Leila Harris on January 18,1937 in Hamilton, Ontario. She attended
Loretto Academy and upon graduation went to nursing school at St Joseph's
Hospital. Mary spent the early part of her nursing career at St. Joseph's
and Stelco, both in Hamilton, Ontario. It was during this time that she
met her best friend and future husband, Roger Miller. They were married
on June 30, 1961. Committing to being a devoted wife and a supportive
mother for Mary Jayne, (Neil) Ted, (Frances), Rod (Leslee) and Jennifer
(Jeff) was Mary's full time passion. Her unwavering love for her family
was undeniable and only flourished with the addition of her nine
grandchildren. Allison, Samantha, and Charlie Crocker; Abby, Jolee, and
Caleb Young; Nolan Miller; and Lucas and Mateo Miller. She played the
role of tireless mom, enthusiastic nana, solid and competitive fan and
coach, and non-judgmental counselor with optimism and a contagious joie de
vivre.
Mary returned to nursing in 1978 and spent 14 years as a pediatric nurse.
Upon retirement she and Roger enjoyed an active lifestyle which included
international travel, golf, tennis, bridge and volunteering, and of course
countless hockey, soccer and dance competitions. In addition to visiting
several continents they spent a month each year in Siesta Key where Mary
thoroughly enjoyed daily walks on the beach with her sisters.
Mary's bountiful love for her family was a rich blessing that was visible
to all. Even as she fought this last battle with cancer her primary
concern was always the well-being of her husband, children and
grandchildren. Mary passed away on Monday, February 23, 2015.
The family would like to thanks the staff at St. Joseph's Hospice for
their compassionate and professional care. Also, the many road trips
completed by family members over the last several months was a true
testament to the unique mark Mary made on each of their hearts. Her smile
may be missed, but the foundation of love and support she built will
continue to be a blessing to us all.
