My sisters and I were so lucky to grow up with Aunt Marjorie and Uncle Gordon nearby, always visiting and inviting us for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and more. Uncle Gordon livened up any holiday gathering or family meal with witty jokes, perfectly-timed lines and a smile that would light up the room. Not only did he keep us all entertained, but he also took time to chat with every family member, from the youngest to the oldest. When many of Benito's family visited London for our wedding, Aunt Marjorie and Uncle Gordon generously hosted a luncheon at Highland. Despite the language barrier, Aunt Marjorie and Uncle Gordon quickly became the favourites among the visitors. If Uncle Gordon was attending a dinner, you were sure to be entertained, even if you didn't speak English!
We were lucky to share our Thanksgiving dinner with Aunt Marjorie and Uncle Gordon in 2013. We took a group photo after dinner and the timer went off right after Uncle Gordon had made us all laugh with one of his classic lines. What a treasured memory!
The dining room table at my parents' home will seem a little quieter at the next holiday gathering, but we will always remember Uncle Gordon for his warmth, sense of humour and care he had for his family.
With much love to Aunt Marjorie and family,
Nora, Benito and Santiago

I don't know how our parents meet but the Bell family has had a long association with the Burns family. It could very well have begun with hockey with Richard and Stuart or perhaps they were classmates at Mountsfield. Martha and Sarah were school mates. I can remember many dinner parties with the Burns, Kellys, Wileys and Haymans at Joan and Walter's. On behalf of my siblings Richard, Sarah and Heather I send the Burns family our deepest sympathy in a week that has once again had a parallel between families with the death of Walter. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Andrea

One of my earliest memories was of a January day in 1950. My father, Ivor Williams, and I were walking on Richmond Street by Simpson's toward the Greyhound Bus Depot to take me to my grandparents while my mother was giving birth to my sister.
We met Gord ( a flying friend of my dad's -420 Sq.) on the sidewalk and when he learned of our intentions, he immediately offered dad his car, gave dad the keys and explained were it was to be found.. Dad later explained to me what a rare and generous offer that had been. After attending Gord's funeral today with my dad I understand that his kindness to us was for Gord not so rare.

Uncle Gordon and Aunt Marjorie were a big part of our childhoods in London, and continued to be as my sisters and I grew up. So many of my earliest memories are of their house and backyard on Upper Queens, and of the family barbecues, Christmas parties and special gatherings they hosted over the years. I was very happy and proud that two years ago our son, Max, was able to include Uncle Gordon on a mailing list of veterans his class sent letters to for Remembrance Day. He will be missed by us all; but his long life provided a wonderful example of dedication to his family and community.

Growing up, we made many trips to Upper Queens for dinners, parties and holiday get-togethers. Much fun was always to be had - a dip in the pool in the world's best backyard, discovering the 'coolest' toys in the basement like 'Operation' and 'Mouse Trap', or watching Uncle Gordon orchestrate games for young and old, while passing the Brandy Alexanders around.
It was an honour to work for Dillon Consulting Ltd. for 9 years - I always felt a sense a pride that this company with hundreds of employees across the country started as a small office in my hometown, and that Uncle Gordon was one of the few men that got the original wheels turning. It was hard not to get choked up when the Dillon promotional video played and showed a picture of young Gordon Burns, post-war, hired as the company's very first engineer. It warmed my heart to tour Uncle Gordon around the Yellowknife office when he traveled here for our wedding - I hope he experienced much pride to think that his small office in London, Ontario had proliferated to the extent of warranting offices in nearly every province in Canada and even one north of 60! I like to think Gordon played a role in facilitating my travels and adventures throughout the Arctic over the last 10 years.
It is hard to say good- bye, but it is easier knowing that Unclue Gordon lived a long life of hard and rewarding work and dedicated volunteerism, all the while knowing to always have a good time and maintain a keen sense of humour. Thank you, Uncle Gordon.

Uncle Gord: You have touched the lives of many during your lifetime - with family, career & volunteerism. My Dad saved an outstanding article in his personal files for many years depicting your Distinguished Flying Cross Award ("RCAF Personnel - Honours Awards - 1939 - 1949). I know of the great love & pride Bruce had for you - his only, older brother. Uncle Gord, I remember you as a humble, accomplished, family man with a wonderful sense of humour. May you rest in peace.

Uncle Gord, I'll always remember you as the first Engineer I ever met and one of the reasons I chose to follow the same career path. Your excitement the moment I showed you my Iron Ring will forever be engrained in my memory. I'll always remember you. Love, Mike.

Uncle Gordon
You lived a life of service and achievement. At only 22 years of age you served as a pilot of a Lancaster bomber and were decorated for bravery. You had a successful professional career and always were deeply committed to family, community, and fellowship. You lived life on your terms. You have left us all a very good example of living to the fullest and being always thoughtful of helping others. I am very grateful for your help and support especially during my earlier years.
Our thoughts are with Aunt Marjorie, Stuart, Shelagh and Martha and your grandchildren.

I fondly remember Gordon at a City Hall meeting, where I was impressed by his convincing argument to save the three-way stop on Upper Queen Street. He spoke well, and his effective defense of the safety of pedestrians, especially school children, helped win the day (plus the signs are still there to this day slowing down the traffic). My thoughts are with Marjorie and the family at this sad time. Jean Keating, and also Kate
