. . the list of comments from Western Football alum who experienced Western football through the gatekeeper that was Clay "Q-ball" Warner is truelly impressive. All the stories run the same - as a rookie coming into camp with a fat ego and high hopes . . . you got a nickname, a growl, and a piece of equipment or shorts or socks that didn't fit or was somehow inferior to what the vets got - our individual christening into the Western Mustang program. That was when you knew that the program came with expectations and you were going to have to earn every inch the rest of the way. When he talked to you, even if it was in that crusty way that was Clay - you knew you had earned a piece of respect.
From all the Western football Alum - thanks Clay, wherever you are, for making us earn it - and eventually, for a "wrap" that would actually fit! You will be missed by all your Purple brothers.

Clayt was an enthusiastic, sincere, committed and vital component of the Mustang Football Team and Athletic department. A great friend of the athletes with a wonderful memory for names and events. He will be remembered by so many Western athletes who appreciated the contributions of this unique person.

Our sympathies go out to the Warner family on Clay's passing. Qball will be warmly remembered by all the Western Footballers and the entire athletic family at Western. You had to have your wits about you, if you were going to try and grab a spare towel or a piece of equipment from out of the cage without Clay's rubber stamp! The man bled purple. He will be sadly missed.
