Obituary of Cal Callaghan Smith

Peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospice, Charles Callaghan Smith passed to the stars, and now resides with his beloved Patsy and his cherished son Fred. Cal was born in London Ontario, on December 16th, 1925, and attended both De La Salle High and Central Collegiate Institute before enlisting in the Canadian Armed Forces, notably celebrating his nineteenth birthday on S.S. Queen Mary heading for Europe. Cal served proudly with the First Canadian Parachute Battalion, and returned home safely to attend the University of Western Ontario. In 1949 Cal married Patsy Mullins, and settled in London. The couple had three children, Sharon, Fred, and Moe. Cal was an avid sportsman, competing and excelling in sailing, golf and squash, but was most passionate in his love of skiing. He was a long-time member of the London Ski Club, and an original member of Devils Glen Country Club in Collingwood. As a businessman, Cal had a long and distinguished career in manufacturing, managing, among others, production for Kaiser Roth, White Stag, and finishing his career with Dashwood Industries in Centralia. Above all else, Cal was devoted to his family, extended and otherwise, enjoying long days of sailing, skiing, golfing with his children, grandchildren, and his many, many wonderful friends. He kept pace with Patsy's inclination to buy and sell real estate, and became a skilled carpenter and general tradesman as a result. Tremendously missed by daughters Sharon Steciuk (Bill) and Moe Hagarty (Mike), and his eight grandchildren, Fred (Sarah), Sue (Jason), Maggie (Darryl), Jono, Meg (Matt), Jeff (Maddie), Jed, Cal (Taylor) and three great-grandchildren, Addie, Rex and Foster. Thanks to the tremendously caring Dr. Michelle Fleming, and the entire staff at the St. Joseph's Hospice who made his final days a celebration. Visitors will be received at John T. Donohue Funeral Home, 362 Waterloo Street at King Street, on Thursday, March 17th from 4-6 o'clock, where the funeral service will be held on Friday, March 18th at 12 noon. Interment St. Peter's Cemetery. Donations to St. Joseph's Hospice would be appreciated.
