Squadron Leader Russell Alexander Bawden, BEM, CD and clasp. Peacefully at LHSC University Hospital on Monday, February 15, 2016 in his 95th year. He is predeceased by his loving and devoted wife of more than 69 years Vera Anita (nee Stillwell) Bawden. He is survived by his daughter Joan-Marie, son Brian, daughter-in-law Jill, grandchildren Michael (Lixin) and John Hammond, Drew and Andrea Bawden, and great grandchildren Stephanie Hammond and Kalan Hammond Rota. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Marion Rutledge, Marie O'Meara (Steve), Mary Stillwell. Predeceased by his sisters Irene and Alice and his brothers Larry, Ray (Mary) and Gene Bawden.
Russ was a graduate of Governor Simcoe Public School and London Central Collegiate Institute. He enlisted in the RCAF on September 8, 1939 as an air photographer and served more than 31 years. Early in his career he instructed Commonwealth airmen at No. 4 AOS in London. Later he was awarded the British Empire Medal for his outstanding service in wartime air photo survey and reconnaissance operations. He rose through the ranks and was commissioned in 1951. His service then included Anti-Submarine Operations, Personnel Training and Research and Development. In May of 1969 he achieved status as an aerospace engineer. His last appointment was that of Director of Photographic Services for the entire Integrated Armed Forces. In this post he was responsible to the High Command for all photographic operations conducted by the land, sea and air arms. He retired February 16, 1971.
Visitors will be received at the John T. Donohue Funeral Home, 362 Waterloo Street at King Street, on Monday, February 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 o'clock. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Parish, 777 Valetta Street, on Tuesday morning, February 23nd at 10 o'clock. Interment in St. Peter's Cemetery. Prayers Monday evening at 7 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, donations to Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
