I was Mary-Anne's group leader in Katimavik when we travelled across Canada, starting out in Quebec, then Ontario and finally Saskatchewan. She was a great group member and we all loved her and her sharp tongue. High standards were Mary-Anne's trademark but she never had to say much to get her point across and she always had one!! She used to say that I was pretty bad but that the group could do worse. Of course, at the end of the year she made sure I knew how much I meant to her and that she valued all that I had done to make the year such a success. I am flattered that she went on to explore more adventures like Katimavik and hope I had something to do with her decision. One thing is sure - we could not have done all the projects we managed in 77/78 without her generous spirit and willing nature. Yes, stubborn and yes opinionated but also a bright, funny, helpful person who will never be forgotten by anyone who had the pleasure to work with her. My deepest sympathies for your loss.

I was lucky enough to have experienced Mary-Anne's inspirational friendship for over 30 years. She had a dreadful disease but the disease did not define her. Rather, her love of family defined her. Her friendships defined her. Her humour, her hope and her bravery defined her. My husband (named by and known only to Mary-Anne as 'the Dougmeister')and I extend our sincere sympathy to all members of the Elie family at this time of great loss. Sincerely, Brenda Bass
