Bev and I grew up sharing a room- you know the kind with the invisible line down the middle. When our dad would tuck us in at night, it was quite a production . We would run upstairs to bed and dive under the covers while he put on his gruff voice. I can still hear him coming up the stairs..thump...one step on the stairs" a kiss" thump another step up " and a hug" ..thump " for a bear " thump " and a bug" thump... by now Bev and I would be squealing and giggling hiding under the covers of our beds. Then it would get louder " a kiss and a hug for a bear and a bug" thumping up the stairs the whole time until he got to our room and we would try to keep our covers one while he tried to find us for our kiss and hug goodnight...no one could tuck you in like Dad.

One of my fondest and earliest memories of my "Nice" uncle Den was one July summer many many years ago. Most of the "Delargy Clan" had gathered at Port Elgin, a favorite family camp spot. Uncle Den, always the naturalistic, was taking my Mom, Granny and Aunt "Pearl" on a guided tour on what was later to become the trout farm pond. I remember walking down the path when Uncle Den, who was in the lead, threw back both his arms , halting the entourage like a crossing guard, "whoa" he announced! "What sort of animal is that lay across the path up ahead??" he rhetorically asked. "Brian, SLOWLY..... creep up there and take a look....." So of course being he obedient and extremely curious 7 or 8 year old I was at the time, I began creeping forward, my eyes focused on the creature laying still across the path.... Just as my juvenile mind recognized the "creature" as an alligator it "jumped" and "growled" at me, sending me tearing back down the path towards the safety of the "adults"...... As I ran I looked back over my shoulder, expecting to the the 12ft alligator in hot pursuit. Instead I saw my "Nice" Uncle Den roaring with laughter as he shook the end of the log he had sometime previously placed across the path. Yes my "alligator" was a strategically place log which when moved just right and accompanied with the proper "Growl" became very realistic, at least to a 7 or 8 year old.
Over the years, I have never walked down that path without remembering and looking for "Uncle Den's" alligator.
May all you seas be calm and the wind always at your back Uncle Den, I'll miss you!

I had the pleasure of working with Denis during his London Life days and remember well his zany sense of humour. A particular jelly bean incident during an area directors' meeting still brings a smile to my face. May the wonderful memories you share bring you comfort during this sad time.
