Maria was the first teacher I met at Galloway Rd PS. Her classroom was beside mine and she helped me survive my first year of teaching. As a staff, we all ate lunch together and Maria would always entertain us with her stories. Discovering a shared love of canoeing, we enjoyed many trips together. Over the years, Maria offered her love, support and kindness to our family. We will miss her greatly!
Happy paddling in Heaven, Maria!

There are no words to describe the depth of my sadness for the loss of Maria, my dear and beautiful friend of 40 years. We started our teaching careers together in Barrie, Ontario, where we lived as roommates, cooking dinners together, eating mounds of delicious pasta, and supporting each other through the many daily challenges of being new teachers. Our friendship remained strong when we both moved back to Toronto, and it continued to grow and mature as we both did. I will always cherish the wonderful times we shared together: the birthday and holiday celebrations, hiking and canoeing adventures, cooking and baking experiments, and countless hours of talking and sharing. Rest In Peace, my beautiful friend. My thoughts, prayers, and most heartfelt condolences go out to your whole family, who were there by your side throughout your heroic journey.
With deepest love,
Agatha Marinakis

What a sad news, I’m very very sorry to Maria’s family and friends. You will be missed! We always say what Italian and Chinese have in common, we say we both love food. You’re a wonderful cook when we get together and next time when we get together it will be you Maria we are talking about.. miss you dearly.

Dear Maria! so many wonderful times and fond memories of times together - from that first Big Canoe trip in 1991 when we pushed our tents close together because of bears, hiking Algonquins trails in the fall time, 40th - 50th - 60th birthday parties, spring canoe trips to Killarney Park with a climbs up Silver Peak, many many paddling trips in Georgian Bay (favourite destination, Franklin Island)...Maria, always understanding, sympathetic, a problem solver...a fantastic cook (her Christmas cake recipe a tradition)..a lively, thoughtful provoking conversationalist around the campfire or kitchen table. World traveler! Sadly missed and never forgotten....one of your many friends and long time, canoe/kayak gal pal, Katherine.

Maria Schiavone
Most loyal friend, gracious & generous host, excellent cook, avid paddler & nature lover, world traveller, wonderful & much-loved teacher, dedicated administrator (vice-principal & principal), caring & kind. Maria is sadly missed by the whole Gregory family. She was our own Italian cultural ambassador. We loved her with all our hearts. Rest in peace my dear, dear friend. ♥️
