My acquaintance with Ian goes back to South Secondary School, and many gatherings around the poker table. My sincere condolences to the family.

Saddened to read of Mr.Ian Underhills passing recently. Well read innovative, inspiring English teacher at South Secondary. One of my best memory recalls from the early 1970's involved Ian veering off course curriculum and bringing in the almost unknown at that time Leonard Cohens first two albums for our class to listen to and discuss. Leonard Cohen instead of Shakespeare. That was eye opening and fun. Mr. Underhill had an uncanny memory for faces and names of the numerous students he taught over the decades he was at South. He never missed a reunion or school event and a chance to reminisce with his former students and colleagues. My condolences to his family and close friends during this transitional time. He certainly raised the teaching bar and left a favourable legacy at South Collegiate. He will be missed.

Ian Underhill was a great teacher. His love of literature teaching inspired me to study English at University and to become an English teacher myself (I even had a portable). The trajectory of my life was certainly directed by a desire to do justice to the gift he gave me. I am glad I had a chance to take him out for lunch and tell him how much he meant to me. I can only imagine how many stories like mine are out there. Rest in Peace, Ian.

Mr Underhill was my English teacher at South over 50 years ago. He was, without doubt, one of the best teachers I’ve ever had or observed( and as a retired principal I’ve seen quite a few)! He taught more than English, he inspired creativity, critical thinking and leadership. It was in his class that I really believed that I had some leadership ability and that teaching was my calling. I was so grateful to get to chat with him at our the 50th reunion of the 1971 class. He was a beacon of innovation in education. His legacy lives on the hundreds of students he inspired. My sincere condolences to his family.
