Louise Kennedy was born in 1933 in Centreville, Ontario. Her mother Sadie Kennedy was a school teacher, then principal. She taught in many areas including Amherst Island and Newburgh before becoming a principal. She retired in her 70s. Her father Vince Kennedy was a dairy cattle farmer who retired in Kingston. Her grandparents owned a hotel in Centreville which served the local community.
Louise grew up on the farm with her parents, brother Vince and sister Loretta. Growing up, she loved her collie dog which looked like lassie. She also loved horses, horseback riding and all the farm animals, even the rooster that madly chased her around. Her brother Vince, was a school teacher in Toronto. Her sister Loretta was a nurse who worked in California. Loretta had two children, Connie and Kathryn who were very successful in their careers. Louise had many cousins who she used to hang out with including Hugh O’Connell who is now a retired Judge.
She had to walk miles to school every day where she excelled at math and english. She went on to become a medical librarian through Queens University at a small campus on Queen Street in Kingston. Then she worked for a few years at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Kingston.
During this time she met the love of her life Al Murphy at a barn dance in Westport while square dancing. They dated for a year and then Al went up to Sudbury for work in the mines. Louise and Al got married in Centreville at St. Anthony’s Church and then she joined him in Sudbury where she worked at St. Josephs hospital as a medical librarian.
In her late 20’s, she had a first of its kind thorax surgery to repair her concave chest, by Dr. Baker who had performed the first ever heart transplant in Canada. She was on the table for 12 hours with 40 percent chance of surviving. She beat the odds and when she left the hospital she weighed 69 pounds.
From there she returned home to recover and later had a baby, Elizabeth Anne, who unfortunately died at birth. Then she had two more girls. The first was Colleen who came out with bright red hair and green eyes and then three years later, she had Maureen who came out with dark brown hair and brown eyes.
They lived in the Sudbury area for 35 years and Louise looked after the family and the home. She was an excellent baker and made amazing apple pie. She loved to dance, especially step dancing, square dancing and jive dancing. She loved to play cards and could beat us all under the table at euchre. Al and Louise used to throw great dinner parties where they would invite relatives from all over. Their door was always open, especially on Sundays after mass. They loved to host friends and family.
When Al retired after 35 years in the mines around Sudbury, they moved to London because Louise fell in love with the countryside and the beautiful farms surrounding the area. Al got a part-time job as a doorman at The Hilton, giving Louise her own space to work on her crossword puzzles and watch her favourite shows. Louise volunteered at The University hospital for 10 years, where she made many friends. Louise loved going out for drives with Al in the country, especially to Stratford and Port Stanley.
Louise also liked to travel. When she was younger, she often went to NYC on summer holidays from school to visit her grandmother, aunts and her sister Loretta. Louise also travelled to California to her niece Kathryn’s wedding.
Louise and Al had the opportunity to travel to Hawaii and Ireland twice which they loved and talked about for years and years to come.
Louise and Al loved travelling to visit family. They visited Kitchener often to see Maureen, Michael, their granddaughter Rhiannon, Rosemary and Grant. They loved to go to the Fricker’s at Christmas and other holidays.
They often visited the Kingston area to see Colleen, Bruce, and their grandchildren Madeline and Liam. They loved to babysit Madeline and Liam when Colleen and Bruce were travelling.
Louise was very proud of Rhiannon, Madeline and Liam, and she was proud of Colleen who is a nurse and Maureen a professor at Conestoga College.
Most of all, Louise was a very spiritual person who went to church every Sunday, rain or shine. She said the rosary every night. In her later years, she watched daily mass on TV when she couldn’t attend church in person. Louise, her daughters Maureen and young Elizabeth are in heaven right now saying a prayer and keeping the gate open for the rest of us.
In summary, Louise loved her family, she loved God and the church, and she loved her friends.
