Agnes Maria de Roos (nee van der Werf) passed away peacefully on November 2, 2022 at Strathmere Lodge in Strathroy, in her 94th year. She was born on September 23rd, 1929, in The Netherlands, daughter of the late Franciscus van der Werf and Anna Smits. Predeceased by husband Johannes (John) de Roos (2004). Agnes was the nineth of ten children: Franciscus, Willibrordus, Adrainus, Lambertus, Elizabeth, Joseph, Engelina, Johanna and Catharina. She was the only one of her family to move away from The Netherlands and was the last of her siblings and in-laws to pass away. Mama, to five children, Lydia Hayes, Joan (Edward) O’Leary, Suzan (Daniel) Kean, John (Paula) de Roos, Anita (Glen) Farrow. Oma to twelve grandchildren, Alana, Meaghan, Tracy, Dennis, Ryan, Matthew, Jonathan, Paul, Eric, Adam, Samantha, Mark. Overgrootmoeder to fourteen great grandchildren, Peyton, Ava, Charlotte, Maverick, Emma, Sophie, Max, Zachary, Gerald, Isabelle, Brendan, Taylor, Leo, Eve. Agnes followed her fiancé and immigrated to Canada in 1955 and they were married January 21, 1956 in Hanover, Ontario. Agnes left behind her entire family, and a small part of her heart always remained in The Netherlands. In 1960, Agnes and John moved to London, Ontario to raise their expanding family and where she ultimately spent the next 60 years. Agnes was fully dedicated to her family and focused all her attention on providing and caring for them. She had many jobs over the years. Her last position was working at St. Joseph’s Hospital, in Medical Records where she retired after 20 years. She spent her evenings sewing, knitting and doing needlework, from barbie outfits to sweaters for her grandkids. Both Agnes and John brought up their children to be strong and self reliant, steeped in Dutch tradition and culture. If you peeked past the white lace curtains in the front window you would have seen many family gatherings with, Chocolate Letters, Oliebollen, Appelflappen, Bitterballen, and Herring. Funeral Mass to be held at Holy Family Parish, 777 Valetta Street on Friday, November 4, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Reception at Holy Family Parish to follow. Private family interment to take place at St. Peter’s Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Donohue Funeral Home.
