Joe was a wonderful person. I graduated from medical school with him in 1982. He and I spent two months together in St Vincent and the Grenadines during our fourth year electives. We had a wonderful time and I got to know him well. We continued our friendship when we both interned in Ottawa. I had not talked to Joe in a long time but will always cherish the memories of the times we spent together Doug Wilkins MD

Perry, Danny and the entire Rea family,
I am so sorry to hear about Joe's death. I have not seen any of you for quite a while, but have many great memories of our time playing football and socializing at CCH, and I recall some wonderful get-togethers in the following years. I remember Joe as an incredible athlete and a genuinely nice person who worked hard at both sport and education. His work on mental health and environmental issues is also impressive.
I offer my condolences and wish you all the best during what I assume must be a very difficult time.

I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I had the priviedge and opportunity to know Joe at Catholic Central High School where we were in the same year and we played high school football and track and field. He was such a kind person as I remember, always very nice to me, and a super athlete and academic and so motivated at whatever he did. He was amazing. His smile and aura was simply infectious.
My sincere condolences to his family and all of his loved ones. His spirit will live in me for as long as I live on this planet.

Joe taught me how to simply live and enjoy nature and cooking. The best time we shared was flying the largest kite and running up and down the beach, and when the kite would fall out in cold lake Huron, Joe was swimming out and rescuing the kite to get it back in flight. His Buddhist beliefs made sense and he expressed such warmth and kindness to all living things. I am so grateful for sharing a night at the lake in 2019 where he cooked up steak and made the coffee, we gazed at the stars and contemplated life he was good at knowing many constellations. If there was a groundhog to be trapped I would call Joe, he was good with wildlife. Joe made the world a better place to live. He was always there and he will be fondly remembered by myself and my son , Warmest condolences to Joes family and friends Veronica & Nick Warner

Words cannot express the devastating loss that is being felt because of Joe's passing. My thoughts go out to the Rea family and all those who had an opportunity to meet and love him. He was such a kind, gentle soul who blessed this earth and those who had the privilege of knowing him. Grief can be overwhelming when a shared laugh can no longer be heard, shared walks through nature can no longer be taken. and when words unspoken cannot be stated. There are so many things that will be missed about Joe....the sparkle in his eye, his smile, the journey through nature trails, planting seeds and tending gardens, skipping stones on the water's edge, sitting under the umbrella on the beach, baking his amazing cakes, scaling ditches to pick apples from abandoned trees, feeding birds and chipmunks from bare hands, discussing the latest happenings and current events over coffee, and sharing favourite documentaries. As a protector and defender of the environment, with unwavering dedication to mental health initiatives, he supported so many important causes, planted seeds of hope for others and dedicated his time and attention to those in need and those he cared for. His acts of kindness and love of nature are forever etched in the minds and hearts of those he touched. The world is a better place because he existed. He will be deeply missed, always loved, and never forgotten.

We would like to express our deepest condolences to the Rea family. We have been so blessed to get to know Joe and see firsthand his boundless passion and commitment to support youth mental health. Back in 2002, Joe planted a seed of hope with his idea to change the way youth receive mental health care. Through his generosity to establish the Dr. Joseph Rea Chair in Mood Disorders, London was the first city in Canada to establish the First Episode Mood and Anxiety Program (FEMAP). Years later, Joe served as an Honourary Chair of the Mental Health Campaign at London Health Sciences Foundation, the result of which will continue to provide life-saving care to thousands of young people for generations to come. Joe will forever be in our hearts. We are thinking of Joe’s family and friends at this difficult time.

We were so saddened by the news of Dr. Rea's sudden passing. "Joe" as he was known to many of us, was a very long-time and generous supporter of the work of St. Joseph's. He was also a pioneering benefactor to the area of mental health care in our region, establishing the first named research chair in mental health care in southwestern Ontario in 1999.
Dr. Rea, his family, and their London-based charitable foundation were honoured at our 2013 Tribute dinner, for their decades of generous support of our work at St. Joseph's. Over the years, Joe was a regular attendee at many of our events, and someone we though of as a true friend. He was a warm, approachable and exceptionally kind person who really was motivated to help others as much as he could. A great loss for our community and an unimaginable loss for his large, loving family. Our deepest condolences to you all.

Joe was the most wonderful friend in a time we both shared and struggled together. He was a true gentleman always and worried so much about others even in his own distressing times. He loved his family and his mom and dad so much. Of the memories abs conversations we had. I went to CCH too and knew Of the great rea family that people so respected as was joe. I think if the crazy smile times abs his sincere love for his mom and dad and he was a joy to Me when some days we thought how does one survive without the blessings we both knew in family. Both from CCH. Although he my elder and still the sincerest sweetest man even in his challenging times to think of others. In learning of his passing o am beyond sad and I think how must this be for his beautiful blessed family and the father he adored. He loved his moms energy and sprite and knowing he is with one of his favourite people I pray helps his amazing father and family. And now two amazing angels watching over. My heat hurts as I met his mom and dad also and learned of their love of family And so very many. He left a legacy in all he touched. The last few days I am sad and yet I smile as we shared a cigarette And walked together and smiled in the days when the sun knew us so well. My sincerest thoughts with the rea family today. Joe my heavenly angel. Joe blessed to have known you and spent really precious moments and our many deep conversations together. I think we thought we could change the world. I guess you decided to go straight to the source. You are So loved. I won’t ever forget you.

An influential man I had the privilege of knowing for many years, unexpectedly passed a few days ago. Dr. Joseph Rea was a philanthropist and advocate for mental health, who used his generosity and sincerity to spread awareness on the dangers of global warming and pollution by implementing solutions and prevention strategies. I remember him fondly as a man who was very kind, generous, and sincere, and helped my family in our time of need. He showed the positivity of human nature and strived to care for the planet we call home. He was a great friend. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and my condolences go out to the Rea family. I want to share a poem titled: "When Great Trees Fall", by Maya Angelou, which analyzes the effects of loss and how nature surrounds all of us; "When great trees fall, rocks on distant hills shudder, lions hunker down in tall grasses, and even elephants lumber after safety. When great trees fall in forests, small things recoil into silence, their senses eroded beyond fear. When great souls die, the air around us becomes light, rare, sterile. We breathe, briefly. Our eyes, briefly, see with a hurtful clarity. Our memory, suddenly sharpened, examines, gnaws on kind words unsaid, promised walks never taken. Great souls die and our reality, bound to them, takes leave of us. Our souls, dependent upon their nurture, now shrink, wizened. Our minds, formed and informed by their radiance, fall away. We are not so much maddened as reduced to the unutterable ignorance of dark, cold caves. And when great souls die, after a period peace blooms, slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration. Our senses, restored, never to be the same, whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be. Be and be better. For they existed."

I first met Joe at the Central Library the day of his Mood Disorder Chair funding announcement and we connected over the table of library materials I was 'manning' for the event as a library staff person. He handed me a book that was very important to him, filled with MANY post-it notes and told me it was THE BEST book on depression (it won the Pulitzer Prize, so, yes, it was right up there!). He handed me that book for safe-keeping while the announcement was made in the Wolf Performance Hall. I read that book and long story short, we became fast-friends, never seeming to run out of things to talk about. I have many memories of time spent with Joe, but perhaps the most notable would be our time spent sitting cross-legged in the circle at the apartment of Yeshe Wangpo learning Buddhist meditation and mindfulness teachings. I know that time meant a lot to Joe. To Joe's family and his large group of loved ones, my sincere condolences to you on the passing of this wonderful man.

Joe lived and worked to help educate people about the environmental issues that are killing our mother earth. He lived his life with integrity regarding this issue. For a few years he planted native wildflower seeds in his backyard and let them flourish, untended so that the birds, butterflies, and insects could live their natural life there. He did so much more than this but this is a fond memory of mine. In his memory may we all do something for this planet which gives us life. Rest in peace Joe Rea. You were so much more than I can express here.
